TII National Heritage Week 2020 Project and Events
Since 2015, TII has organised a national programme of events to mark Heritage Week, sharing the results of its archaeological and heritage work at a local, regional and national level. In previous years this has included family days, pop-up exhibitions, seminars, and lectures. With current public health restrictions, this year's programme will focus on sharing some of the results of TII's work virtually, working with different partners including local authorities, archaeological companies, specialists and local heritage groups.
As part of this year's project, TII has created an exciting new resource on the TII website: a dedicated webpage bringing together in one place a series of Story Maps that combine the latest mapping technology with narrative text, images, and multimedia content to tell compelling stories. They are an ideal tool to communicate archaeological discoveries and have been used on a number of TII projects. In the main, these have been produced by the archaeological consultants who carried out the archaeological investigations:
- Forging a Future: tales of archaeological discovery along the N73 road corridor in north County Cork, Ireland by TII/CCC
- From Milltown's first farmers to landed gentry; the archaeology of the N70 Kilderry Bends Road Improvement Scheme, Co. Kerry by ACSU
- Living Between the Lakes: the archaeology of the N55 Road, Corduff to South of Killydoon Section A, County Cavan by ACSU
- Digging Around Listowel: the archaeology of the N69 Bypass, County Kerry by AMS
- The Archaeology of the N22 Baile Bhuirne to Macroom Road Development, in West Cork, Ireland by TII
- An Archaeological Journey Along the Carlow Bypass by Rubicon Heritage Services
Heritage Week is also a fitting opportunity to announce another new online resource. Thanks to our colleagues in the Digital Repository of Ireland, the TII Digital Heritage Collections are now accessible through Europeana, which brings together cultural heritage from across Europe’s museums, galleries, libraries and archives.
We are also delighted to report that on Thursday 20th August Rob Goodbody of Historic Building Consultants will be delivering an online talk entitled 'Making omelettes, minimising egg breakage—architectural heritage on new transportation routes'.
In partnership with the Rathcroghan Visitor Centre, Roscommon County Council and Archaeological Management Solutions, a lecture series is being organised on the exciting archaeological works being undertaken on the N5 Ballaghaderreen-Scramoge Road Project, which will run over five days of Heritage Week 2020 on the Rathcroghan Facebook page.
- Monday, 17th August 2020: "In the Shadow of Rathcroghan". A synopsis of the archaeological work on the N5 scheme to date and a summary of the discoveries. Deirdre McCarthy, Roscommon County Council, N5 Resident Archaeologist.
- Tuesday, 18th August 2020: "Ancestral Places". The multi-phase site at Gortnacrannagh, where an enclosure, ring-ditches, burials and burnt mounds were excavated. John Channing, AMS site director.
- Wednesday, 19th August 2020: "At Home in Roscommon". The built heritage surveys and excavations on vernacular structures, with special emphasis on some interesting artefacts. Eve Campbell, AMS site director.
- Thursday, 20th August 2020: "Settlement & Cemetery". The Bronze Age landscape, including houses, cremations and burnt mounds excavated at Ballaghcullia (available in English/Irish). Patrick Walsh, AMS site director.
- Friday 21st August: "Hidden in Plain Sight". The excavation of a conjoined ringfort at Killeen East with four associated souterrains and burials. Brian O’Hara, AMS site director.
This webpage will be updated as the details of other events and projects are finalised.
