Luas is Growing: Luas Finglas Public Consultation launched and new 55m tram now in service
Researchers from the School of Psychology, Trinity College Dublin are co-ordinating a research project focusing on road user behaviour at Luas junctions. The aim is to assess and understand road driver behaviour when approaching Luas junctions (particularly in relation to road violations like running red lights). The researchers have developed a short survey to assess and understand road user behaviour. The survey can be accessed via the link below and it should take 20 minutes to complete.
Irish Rail/SISK started works at Fassaugh Road Bridge / Liam Whelan Bridge in October 2014. The works involved the installation of new foundations and the construction of support structures for the new bridge deck. The second phase of the works involved the building of the new bridge deck beside the existing one on a temporary platform. Once the new deck was ready the existing deck was removed and the new deck was moved into position.
To facilitate essential Luas Cross City construction works, from 8pm on Friday July 29th until 6am on Tuesday August 2nd, Dublin’s north and south quays will be closed to eastbound and westbound traffic at O’Connell Bridge.

As part of the Railway Order application process for providing for the new Northbound Dawson Stop, an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) will be undertaken and an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) will be prepared and submitted to An Bord Pleanála for a Railway Order approval. As a preliminary step in the EIA process, a Draft EIS Scoping Report has been prepared. This document sets out the proposed content (scope) of the report, the environmental issues to be investigated and the methodology for assessment of the environmental issues.
RPA welcomes the granting of a Railway Order today for Luas Cross City, a new Luas line running from the Green Line terminus at St. Stephen’s Green through the city centre, Phibsborough and Cabra to Broombridge. The Luas Red and Green lines will finally be connected and interchange with the Maynooth Line will be provided at Broombridge. The new line will also directly serve the new DIT Campus at Grangegorman which was recently given the green light to proceed and which will accommodate more than 20,000 students. This represents a very significant milestone in the creation of a high quality, integrated public transport network for Dublin.
Transport Minister Paschal Donohoe T.D. was on hand today to witness the signing by the National Transport Authority (NTA) and the Railway Procurement Agency (RPA) and Transdev Dublin Light Rail Limited of the new Luas operation contract, which includes responsibility for the maintenance of the Luas infrastructure and rolling stock through a number of novated maintenance contracts.
On Tuesday 22nd July 2014 the Railway Procurement Agency applied to An Bord Pleanála for a Railway Order in respect of the construction of the Luas Cross City Dawson Northbound Stop.
Transport Minister Leo Varadkar T.D. and Minister of State Alan Kelly T.D. were on hand at Saint Stephens Green to mark the tenth anniversary of the opening of Luas. The Green Line, which opened three months ahead of the Red Line was officially opened by then Transport Minister the late Seamus Brennan T.D. on Wednesday June 30th 2004 who predicted that the final jury verdict on what had been a somewhat controversial project would be delivered by the Luas users. How right he was! The official opening in 2004 was followed by four further days of free travel which was taken up by an astonishing 430,000 passengers.
