Trams and Depots
Luas operates 2 different tram models on the network and there are 3 Luas Depots which support the maintenance of the tram fleet.
Trams
The Luas network is served by 40 Alstom Citadis 401 trams and 41 Alstom Citadis 502 trams. The Red Line is operated by 40 Alstom Citadis 401 trams. The Luas Green Line is operated by 41 Alstom Citadis 502 trams.
- Citadis 401 trams are 40.8m long, 2.4m wide and 70% low floor.
- Citadis 502 trams are 54.7m long, 2.4m wide and 100% low floor.
At the launch of the Luas network in 2004 the rolling stock fleet consisted of 26 Alstom Citadis 301 trams, which were 30m in length, and 14 Alstom Citadis 401s which are 40.8m long. All of the original 301-type trams were extended to a 401 specification by September 2007.
To accommodate a number of line extensions to the network, 26 Citadis 402 trams were procured, and delivery of these trams took place between May 2009 and December 2010. These trams operated solely on the Green Line and all of the existing 401 trams on this line were transferred to operate on the Red Line.
In anticipation of the opening of the Luas Cross City project in December 2017, a total of 7 Citadis 502 trams were procured. These vehicles are 54.7m in length and have the capacity to carry over 400 passengers.
As passenger demand increased, and as part of the Green Line Capacity Enhancement (GLCE) project, all of the Citadis 402s operating on the Green Line were extended to the same length and specification as the 502-type trams. These vehicles were extended between May 2019 and March 2021. There are some minor differences between newly-purchased Citadis 502s and those that were extended from an original Citadis 402 specification. In addition to this, a further 8 Citadis 502s were procured and delivery of these trams took place between July 2020 and February 2021. In total, there are 81 trams that operate on both the Red and Green lines, 40 Citadis 401s on the Red and 41 Citadis 502s on the Green.
